Standard #9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.

The artifact that connects to standard 9 is case study one from the course creating an inclusive classroom. This case study allows teachers to engage in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate their practice, practically the effects of their choices and actions on others, and adapts practices to meet the needs of each learner. This case study is about a second grade teacher who is facing challenges during the start of the school year. The students are not following procedures and the teacher is struggling with classroom management. By reviewing this artifact, the teacher is able to engage in ongoing professional learning and use evidence to continually evaluate their practices. This artifact allows teachers to think about ways and procedures to better their practices during the beginning of a school year. This artifact allows teachers to adapt practices that will meet the needs of all students. This artifact talks about ways to create classroom codes, standard operating procedures, and using teacher language within the classroom in order to meet the needs of all students. The students are able to collaborate with the teacher to create SOPS and shared visions in a classroom. When hearing the voices and opinions of all students we are able to meet the students needs. When teachers analyze practices that are not working well within the classroom, this allows them to learn new professional skills and evaluate their teaching.

This artifact expands my pedagogy knowledge and will improve my practice as an educator. This assignment allowed me to see how important it is for teachers to engage in ongoing professional learning, use evidence to continually evaluate their practices, and to adapt practices that meet the needs of all learners. Within my future classroom, I will incorporate the practices that we learned to use during the first weeks of school in order to create a well managed classroom environment. This artifact expanded my pedagogy because it allowed me to evaluate different teaching practices and to come up with practices to better manage a classroom and meet the needs of all students. In my future classroom, I will continue to evaluate my teaching practices in order to engage in ongoing professional learning and to adapt practices that meet the needs of all learners.
