Standard #6: Assessment

The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.

The artifact that connects to standard 6 is the reading assessment assignment. This artifact examines the different exams that are given in first grade to help assess students during a reading block. This artifact shows that the teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. In this assignment, there is an assessment inventory which allows teachers to understand the purpose, usage, and frequency of each assessment. These different assessment types allow learners to be engaged in their own growth. Students can set learning goals for each assessment that they should reach by the end of the school year. These assessments are given throughout the school year in order to track the growth of each student. By using these assessments teachers’s can plan their instruction based on the needs of each students. For example, the data of these assessments is used to create leveled reading groups. The data can then be used to create the reading centers and to decide what task is done in each reading center. The variety of different assessments allow engagement of all different students and a wide range of data. Teachers using different assessments allow us to monitor student growth and guide the teacher’s and student’s decision making.

This artifact expands my pedagogy knowledge and will improve my future practice as an educator. This assignment allowed me to see the importance of using multiple methods of assessments to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and student’s decision making. Within the classroom, I will ensure that I use multiple different assessments in order to collect data on students and to meet the needs of all students. These different assessment types will help me as a teacher in order to make decisions and create lessons to help my students succeed in their academics. This reading assessment assignment allowed me to gain knowledge about reading assessments to use within my future classroom.
