Professional Development: What areas will need attention and further development in your beginning teaching career?
Maya used multiple strategies in her classroom management. Taking into consideration that each class of students is different, I would encourage her to continue her quest in learning new strategies in classroom management as well as collaborating with her colleagues when she attains her first full time teaching role.
Strengths: What strengths is your intern bringing to the profession that are more apparent to you now as he/she completes his/her student interning?
Maya demonstrated a strong understanding of her students’ developmental needs, both academically and socio-emotionally during her student teaching. She effectively employed multiple instructional strategies to support diverse learning needs, ensuring that all students had opportunities to reach their full potential. The classroom environment was positive and inclusive, fostering mutual respect between students and the teacher. Students were actively engaged in learning activities, including partner work, and demonstrated a high level of participation.
Maya skillfully integrated calming techniques to support student self-regulation and engagement when necessary. This is part of her repertoire of having a positive and respective learning environment. She has multiple classroom management skills in her repertoire of skills.
An example of Maya’s teaching was one about animal traits. She exhibited strong content knowledge, particularly teaching about similarities, and differences. Her instructional approach encouraged problem-solving as students collaboratively analyzed a scenario at the end of the lesson, utilizing diverse questioning strategies to deepen their understanding about animals and their traits. She effectively employed multiple instructional strategies to support diverse learning needs, ensuring that all students had opportunities to reach their full potential.
Overall, Maya is a reflective practitioner who comes to class well-prepared and is receptive to feedback about her teaching. Her ability to implement engaging, student-centered lessons while maintaining a structured and respectful learning environment highlights her strengths as an educator.
