Standard #1 Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

The artifact that connects to Standard 1: Learner Development is the language and literacy developmental time line. The developmental timeline that I created shows the reading development in humans from 6 months old to age 16 and up. This artifact shows how learners grow and develop when they are learning how to read. When looking at the reading development timeline, we are able to recognize that the patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas. The development of reading time line also allows us to implement developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences in the classroom. This artifact connects to standard one because it educates teachers on how students learn how to read. This allows teachers to make appropriate decisions when it comes to educating their students at the appropriate grade level. Being aware of how learners grow and develop is important because teachers can help students move forward and become stronger in the subject that they are focusing on. When teachers are able to recognize patterns in children’s learning, it is easier to step in when intervention is needed so that students don’t fall behind and they get the correct help they need. Teachers being aware of the developmental reading timeline, will allow students to have a positive learning experience.

This artifact expands my pedagogical knowledge and will improve my future practice as an educator. Completing this assignment and connecting it to standard one allowed me to understand how important it is to understand how learners grow and develop in order to give them the best educational experience. This will improve my future practice as an educator because I will be able to identify the patterns of learning and development within an individual and provide extra support to my students when needed. In the classroom, I will make sure to design and implement developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences for my students in order to prepare them for the next grade level and provide them with the skills they need to succeed. As a future educator, I will make sure to understand the developmental timeline for how children learn to read and gain other skills in order to differentiate learning for my students.
